I learnt with a heavy heart, the passing away of Swami Chetana Nanda Saraswati. I have always known him as a Chakrapani Mausa. Since my earliest days of recollection, I remember the friendship between him and my father Dr. Damodar Satpathy. When the two of them would discuss on subjects, it was easy to discern that two intellectuals were in conversation. He was a tall handsome man who spoke with a deep baritone voice. He not only had a commanding presence but when he spoke he could easily attract your attention to him no matter your preoccupations. What I always admired in him was his capacity to be so highly erudite yet so easily understandable too. I remember listening to him as a child and being able to understand his point of view and then debating with him as an adult, when the discussions would be more complex, and still understanding easily what he wanted to convey. I cannot believe he is not with us now anymore. He and my father will continue their lively discussions in the heaven. As a professor and scientist he won much admiration. In his later years he embraced sprituality and won even more admiration. People would listen to him for his guidance on life and his philosophy and would easily see the simple reasoning behind his dealing with complex subjects. He was an icon, both of intellectual capacity as well as absolute humility. I was always struck by his kindness, ability to relate to the other person, his empathy, his knowledge and absolute respect for the human being in you. Today when I write down these thoughts I can still see him vividly in my imagination with the same smile, poise, confidence and kindness that always evoked in me, a respect that came not simply because he was my father's colleague but from his sheer persona. You could see a towering personality in him, yet communicating with you with the humility, empathy and understanding of a very wise and kind soul. May his soul rests in peace. May his family find the courage to deal with his passing away while also rejoicing with the knowledge that wherever he is now after life, he will be a source of joy and encouragement to those around him.
Om Shanti!
